Civil War Day with the 27th NJ

  • Date: 08/01/2021 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM
  • Location: Shippen Manor
    8 Belvidere Avenue
    Oxford, New Jersey 07823
  • Introduction: Civil War Day with the 27th NJ and exterior tours of Manor

Welcome to the Manor!

Today, we are fortunate to be hosting Co. F of the 27th Regiment ("Bailey's Boys") for an on-site Civil War Day! Company F will be on the east lawn of the Manor, resting from their long travels.

The men will have two firing demonstrations for our visitors, at 1pm and 3pm.

In addition to visiting the soldiers and learning more about their experiences during the war, visitors can also stop by the tent(s) of the 27th's field hospital. The field hospitals were created as a result of the U.S. Army's inability to cope with the devastation of the war. Due to a lack of experienced surgeons, adequate hospitals and reliable transportation, the medical staff struggled to tend properly to the wounded men.

About the 27th NJ

The 27th was a Union Civil War regiment from NJ that was organized at Camp Frelinghuysen in Newark, NJ on September 3, 1862 and served for a 9-month enlistment. They left the State for Washington, D.C. on October 9, 1862 and were positioned at East Capital Hill until October 29 and near Alexandria, VA until December 1. They were attached to the 2nd Brigade, Casey's Division, during the Defences of Washington, D.C. to December 1862. They were then a part of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 9th Army Corps, of the Army of the Potomac until March 1863 and the Army of the Ohio until June 1863.  The regiment was mustered out on July 2, 1863.
