Caregiving is a universal reality that touches almost every family. Unpaid family caregivers are the backbone of long-term care in America.
Often assuming their role without preparation or education, caregivers take on risks to their own physical, emotional, and financial health. Many watch their savings dry up, absorb the financial hit of having to pass up promotions, or are even forced to leave the workplace altogether.
Family caregivers provide an invaluable resource to their loved ones as well as to America. Their courage, compassion and dedication to family members, friends and neighbors allow the aging population and persons with disabilities and mental illness to remain independent. This often comes at great cost - economic, physical and mental - to caregivers. I am humbled to assist caregivers and meet them where they are in their caregiving role.
AARP estimates that family caregivers provided 36 billion hours of unpaid care worth $600 billion in 2021.In addition, the average caregiver pays more than $7,200 annually in costs for transportation and other needs. In addition, in 2023 the National Alliance for Caregiving estimates 65.7 million Americans (or 29 percent of the U.S. adult population involving 31 percent of all U.S. households) served as family caregivers for an ill or disabled relative. That does not include friends and neighbors.
Are you a Caregiver?
• Do you provide care for a parent, spouse, child with special needs, sibling, friend or neighbor?
• Do you provide care for anyone with issues of aging, mental illness or a physical or developmental disability?
• Do you pick up medication at the pharmacy, make meals, provide personal care assistance or medical transportation, pay bills, or grocery shop for anyone?
If the answer to any of these questions is YES, you are a Caregiver and you are not alone.
• Caregiving often happens overnight and without anyone asking you if you are ready, willing and/or able to provide unpaid care to another person. I will meet caregivers where they are in the stages of caregiving.
