Hazardous Materials Team
The Warren County Hazardous Materials Response Team (WCHMRT; the Team) was created to protect the residents and visitors of Warren County from Chemicals, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) emergencies.
The Team members are Warren County employees and volunteers from various areas in the County. When dispatched, the Team will respond to various locations within the County to meet at HAZMAT vehicles to respond to the emergency. Once on the scene, team members are assigned to perform tasks to:
- Protect life and property within the County,
- Prevent further contamination to the environment, and
- Remediate what the emergency caused (reversing or stopping the damage that the emergency caused).
Team members are also on scene to perform decontamination for residents, visitors or fellow team members who come into any contact with a chemical or contaminant.
All members of the WCHMRT work as a team with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJ DEP) and uses the ESF-10 (Emergency Support Function – 10), Oil and Hazardous Materials Response which provides federal support in response to an actual or potential discharge and/or release of oil or hazardous materials when activated.
Every year, each member receives a physical and reviews mandatory classes to ensure proper techniques are used while on scene of an emergency. The National Incident Management System (NIMS) (National Incident Management System | FEMA.gov) compliance model is followed which works within the Incident Command System (ICS).
Members, whether county personnel or volunteers, represent Warren County Government at all times while on scene of emergencies. Members work closely with public safety partners of Warren County, the State of New Jersey and public safety partners of neighboring Counties.
The WCHMRT is also a part of the Northwest Regional Hazardous Materials Response Team, which consists of Warren, Hunterdon, Sussex, Somerset and Morris Counties. When an emergency occurs and more assistance is needed, the On-Scene Incident Commander (OIC) will request the Northwest Team to respond. This request is made to the Communications Center by the OIC.
The WCHMRT also assist in the county Hazardous Waste Day, held at the Warren County Landfill in Oxford and hosted by the Warren County Pollution Control Authority. The WCHMRT is on site to assist for any emergencies that may occur during this event.
The WCHMRT is always looking for members. If you are interested in becoming a member on the WCHMRT, contact Tom Nigro at the Warren County Health Department at 908-475-7960.
